Welcome to Prealgebra. We hope that you will enjoy this class and the materials supplied to you.

However, they are being made available free for use in educational institutions. This offer does not extend to any application that is made for profit. The Prealgebra textbook:

The textbook is in pdf format, which can be viewed and printed using the free Acrobat Reader software available from http://get.adobe.com/reader. Note: It is important that you have the most recent update of Acrobat Reader that is compatible with your operating system.

Important! The textbook contains two very special interactive features: Movies and "You Try Its". Neither will work unless Adobe Reader is installed and configured properly.

Special Instructions: On all operating systems, when installing Adobe Reader, you will be asked if you want Adobe Reader to be the default pdf reader. Answer "YES" to this question.

  • Macintosh Users: You must use the Safari browser.
Getting Started:

The textbook is provided free-of-charge in two ways: via this web site and on a CD. If you want to access the textbook via the internet, the URL is

http://msenux2.redwoods.edu/PreAlgText/.

You should also receive the textbook on CD from your instructor.


Organization of this web site:
  • Textbook: The Prealgebra Textbook file contains the entire textbook, including exposition, exercises, answers to the odd-numbered problems, and an index. Solutions for the exercises are not included in this file.

  • Solutions Manual: The Prealgebra Solutions Manual file contains detailed solutions to all of the odd-numbered problems in the textbook.

  • Individual Chapter Files: Each Chapter file contains all of the exercises, answers to the odd-numbered problems, and an index. Solutions for the exercises are not included in these chapter files.

  • Individual Chapter Solutions Files: Each Chapter Solutions file contains detailed solutions to all of the odd-numbered problems in that chapter.

Interactive Features:
  • You Try Its: The textbook has a "You Try It" problem in the margin near each example in the textbook. The online and CD versions of the Prealgebra textbook also have additional interactive "You Try It" problems for each example. Click on the "You Try It" link in the green rectangle next to each example to try a problem similar to the example. Solutions are included, and you can access up to five similar problems in this manner.

  • Movies: The online and CD versions of the Prealgebra textbook contain movies for the examples in Chapter 1. After reading the example, play the movie to receive additional help. Development of movies for remaining chapters is ongoing. Be sure to visit the website to look for updates throughout the semester.

  • The online and CD versions of the Prealgebra textbook have hyperlinks in the table of contents, throughout the textbook, and the index. Clicking on these hyperlinks take you to the page referenced by the hyperlink. Clicking the "Back Button" in Adobe Reader will return you to the page you were on before clicking the hyperlink.

Installing the textbook files on your computer:
  • You may find it convenient to install the textbook files on your computer for easy access. To install the textbook files, follow these instructions:
    1. Create a folder on your hard drive.
    2. Download the following three files into that folder.
    3. Unpack the youtryit.zip file.
    4. You can now open the textbook file Prealgebra.pdf and the solutions file PrealgebraSolutions.pdf using Adobe Reader.
  • Note: The movies will not work with this setup. Use the online or CD version of the Prealgebra Textbook to access the movies.

CD version of the textbook:
  • Textbook: The Prealgebra.pdf file on the CD contains the entire textbook, including exposition, exercises, answers to the odd-numbered problems, and an index. Solutions for the exercises are not included in this file.

  • Solutions Manual: The PrealgebraSolutions.pdf file on the CD contains detailed solutions to all of the odd-numbered problems in the textbook.

Printed version of the textbook:

For those who prefer a printed version of the textbook, there are two different printed packages which can be ordered from
lulu.com. These packages can also be purchased at the College of the Redwoods bookstore. All printed packages are bound paperback books in black-and-white.


Errata for the textbook and solutions manual:
