Our Mission
The mission of SASS is to eliminate educational barriers unique to students with disabilities, provide learning support and pathways to success, empower self-advocacy, and ensure equity, equal rights, and access under the law.

At College of the Redwoods, students who have professionally verified disabilities are eligible to receive educational support services and courses as defined in Title V of the California Education Code. Students desiring accommodations and/or services must request them from the SASS specialist, in a timely a manner. Services may include:

How do I receive SASS services?
- Enroll at College of the Redwoods
- Following your confirmation of enrollment, go to and complete the online SASS application.
- We will process the application and you will be notified of eligibility via student
email and then you may call and make an intake appointment with a SASS specialist.
- During your intake appointment you will communicate with the SASS specialist about service and accommodation options.
If you have not heard from SASS within 10 working days, please call the SASS office on your campus and ask to check on the status of your application.

Schedule an Appointment with a SASS Advisor
Students meet with a SASS Advisor to create academic plans and determine what accommodations the student qualifies for. Meetings can be scheduled by calling the appropriate office.
Due to COVID-19, SASS appointments will be conducted by Zoom video conference or over the phone. Appointments can be made by calling the DSPS phone number for your campus.
Dear Parents,
The goal of SASS is to help your student become an independent, engaged and successful student. To that end, we will not accept appointment requests with you in the absence of your student. Any discussion pertaining to the education of your student must include the presence of your student. You are more than welcome to accompany your student to any meeting with SASS staff.

Adaptive PE (Eureka Campus Only)
Adaptive PE courses provide education to meet the lifestyle fitness needs for students with disabilities, in a weight room environment. This class is also appropriate for those students without a disability but who do not feel confident in a regular physical education class. Equipment is provided to train students in the use of cardiovascular, resistive, strengthening, and flexibility exercises. An individual student contract is prepared based on medical verification of disability and baseline assessment.
PE 90 - Adaptive Resistive Training
A comprehensive fitness course designed for students with disabilities. This class is in a weight room setting with access to adaptive equipment. Individual and group instruction will be provided. Areas to be covered include, lifetime fitness programs, flexibility-range of motion, cardiovascular conditioning, general strength training. An individual goal for each student will be closely monitored by the instructor with the use of a pre and post semester physical assessment.
PE 98 - Adaptive Physical Education
A comprehensive fitness course designed for students with disabilities. This is an activity course which allows for late entry and access to adaptive physical education programs numbered 90-99. Contractual goals will be set between instructor and student. The major components for this activity lab may include but not limited to: resistive water exercise, cardiovascular conditioning, aqua jogger/lap swimming instruction, flexibility-range of motion, lifetime fitness programs, and general strength training. Students can select either a pool setting or a resistive setting.
* The pool portion of the class is currently not available.
PE 302 - Adaptive Conditioning
A course designed to enable the student with disabilities to become independent and aware of his/her individual abilities through appropriate resistive and weight training activities.
Alternate Media
DSPS Alternate Media Procedures & Policies
Alternate media generally refers to text or other materials produced in a specialized format intended for use by persons with disabilities. Types of alternate media include, but are not limited to: braille, large print, audio material, certain types of electronic files, and video with closed and open captioning.
- Eligibility for this service is determined by the Disability Services and Programs for Students Coordinator or by an LD Specialist and is based in part on the professional documentation provided by the student.
- Alternate media must be requested through a SASS specialist each semester it is needed.
- Students requesting materials in alternative formats must own a physical copy of a textbook or other course material and have proof of purchase before the alternate media will be distributed. Some books might need to be unbound in order to scan them, and would be returned to the student with a different binding.
- Requests for materials in alternative format will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Once a request is made, preference will be given to the format specified by the student. However, the recommendation of SASS professionals will be used in determining the specific media format for each academic course.
- Alternative format requests must be submitted as soon as the student learns of their need; late requests will be honored provided that the students making the request understand that the completion of the work may be delayed.
- Turn-around times for alternative format requests are determined on a case-by-case basis. Upon review of material to be formatted and converted, the Alternate Media Specialist will notify the student of the projected completion date. SASS will make every effort to complete the request in a timely manner.
- Students will be provided with one alternative format copy for each item required for academic use. The student will not copy or reproduce any material provided by SASS, nor allow anyone else to do so. Misuse of this material may result in disciplinary action by College of the Redwoods. (Refer to the Student Code of Conduct) Copyrighted material may not be reproduced or distributed in a format other than a specialized format exclusively for use by blind or other persons with disabilities. Any further reproduction or distribution in a format other than a specialized format is an infringement of Copyright Law.
- Students failing to pickup completed alt media requests will not be eligible for alt media in the following semester
